MELAKA, 28 October 2023

A battery-powered street sweeping robot makes its debut at the tourist enclave of Bandar Hilir here to complement Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM 2024).

SWM Environment Sdn Bhd corporate affairs general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said the robot can circumvent any obstacle it encounters along its cleaning routes.

"The robot itself is a tourist attraction and can effectively maintain the hygiene level of the streets in Bandar Hilir," he said after the robot was inaugurated on Saturday (Oct 28).

He said the robot will be operational each Saturday during the car-free zone initiative from 6pm to midnight.

"The robot will either be managed by an operator or automatically through a remote control device," he added.

Mohd Norlisam said the battery can last up to eight hours while the robot is able to collect huge volumes of trash in a day.

He also mentioned that the robot travels at a speed of two to three kilometres per hour and can cover a vast area in an hour of operation.

"For safety concerns, there is a beacon to warn pedestrians when the robot is operating," he added.

Mohd Norlisam said the robot is equipped with a strong suction power that can suck up all types of trash along its cleaning routes.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and other state top officials also got a preview of the robot’s operation during a gotong-royong event on Oct 15.
