Johor floods ease, cleanup underway

JOHOR BARU, 24 March 2025
Floods in Johor's five affected districts are receding despite rain and thunderstorms forecast by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
As of 10am, 3,876 victims from 1,146 families remain in 24 relief centres across Johor Baru, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Kluang and Batu Pahat.
Johor Baru is the worst hit, with over 2,300 evacuees sheltering in 10 centres.
State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said evacuees in other districts are gradually returning home.
Cleanup efforts are underway, with volunteers helping residents remove debris and damaged furniture.
SWM Environment Sdn Bhd corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said waste management teams have collected about 150 tonnes of debris from flood-hit areas.
Johor DAP vice-chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali said its action unit deployed over 50 volunteers to assist with cleaning.
"RM5,000 was donated for cleaning supplies, food for volunteers, and essential equipment. We also provided eight RORO bins for disposal and coordinated public donations," he said.
